WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic volleyball team earned another Landmark Conference win on Friday evening against Lycoming. After going down one set to the Warriors, the Cardinals pulled out the victory 3-1.
The Warriors had a strong start to the first set, building a 9-0 lead as Catholic were still looking for its rhythm.
Juliette Cummings put a stop to Lycoming's run with the first point for the Cardinals. From there, Catholic steadily chipped away at the Warriors' lead with kills from
Maddie Wilkey, Julia Raab,
Kate Kozlowski and
Laci Freitas but were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 25-13.
Set two saw a closer contest, as Catholic won the first point. The Landmark foes went point-for-point in the second, neither team able to hold the lead for long. After a strong shot from Raab tied the score at 17, the Cardinals managed to sneak in a few extra points to grow their lead to three. The Warriors battled back, cutting the Catholic lead to just one. The Cardinals took a timeout to regroup, then both Wilkey and
Julia Turchiano found the floor to solidify the set two victory, 25-22.
The pressure was on in set three as each team was fighting for the match lead. The Warriors won the first three points in the set before Catholic got on the board with a kill from
Anna Maria Carella. It was once again a tight contest, with the score tying up at eight, then again at 14. The momentum stayed in Catholic's favor for the rest of the set despite the Warriors sticking close by.
Kate Kozlowski picked up the final point for the Cardinals to take the set 25-21 and give them a 2-1 advantage.
Catholic opened the scoring in set four with a service ace from Carella. The Warriors answered with a few points of their own to take the lead. The Cardinals battled back, later scoring four straight to regain the lead. It switched hands twice more before Catholic took hold of it, and locked in the win with a kill from Freitas.
Julia Raab led the team with 12 kills, while also logging a solo block.
Kate Kozlowski had another stellar night, picking up seven kills with an attack percentage of .462. She also had a solo block on the day.
