Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball sophomore Tommy Kelly scored a career-high 30 points, but Susquehanna held off the Cardinals for a 98-92 overtime victory Saturday at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
The Cardinals (8-3, 1-1 LC) rallied from eight points down in the final 35 seconds to force overtime when Kelly hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 85-85 with nine seconds remaining in regulation.
In overtime, the River Hawks scored the first four points and never trailed as Catholic was 2-of-8 from the floor, including 0-of-3 from three-point range.
Kelly totaled his first career 30-point game, eclipsing his previous career high of 23 points set earlier this season in a 68-60 victory versus Gallaudet on Nov. 13. He scored 16 points in the second half.
The game featured seven ties and 17 lead changes. Catholic led by as many as 12 with 2:26 remaining in the first half before Susquehanna finished on a 9-0 run to cut its deficit to three at the half, 41-38.
The teams went back and forth over the first nine minutes of the second half before the River Hawks took an eight-point advantage with 9:18 to play.
Sophomore Jesse Hafemeister finished with 23 points marking his fifth career game with at least 20 points. He also led the team with five rebounds, tying him with freshman Dan Buckley who set a new career high.
In his first game since Dec. 11, sophomore Jake Melady had 13 points and four rebounds. Meanwhile, sophomore Jake Timby had 12 points and five assists. He has led the team in assists in each of the last two games after posting a career-high six on Wednesday against Southern Virginia.
Danny Frauenheim led Susquehanna (10-3, 2-0 LC) with a game-high 33 points, 18 of which came in the second half and overtime.
The Cardinals look for their fifth win in seven road games this season when they travel to Elizabethtown on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams since Feb. 5, 2020.
