Martins Keys Second-Half Surge in Win Over Southern Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore Colby Martins scored 19 points as the Catholic University men's basketball team used a dominant second half en route to a 74-58 victory over Southern Virginia Wednesday.

In their first game in 25 days, the Cardinals (8-2) outscored the Knights 43-22 in the second half to earn the win in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Catholic shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half, going 15-of-24 from the floor, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. The team shot 57.1 percent from the floor for the game and 60.0 percent from behind the arc, going 9-for-15.

Meanwhile, Southern Virginia was just 7-of-29 from field for 24.1 percent in the second half which included going 1-for-13 from three-point range.

Martins scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half on 5-of-7 shooting. He was 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

Martins headlined a strong team peformance as four players scored in double figures, including senior Frank Lumaj who had a career-high 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Sophomores Jesse Hafemeister and Jake Timby each added 11 points. Timby was 3-of-3 from behind the arc and had a career-high six assists.

Despite shooting 52.0 percent in the first half, the Cardinals trailed by as many as nine before cutting their deficit to five at the half, 36-31.

Catholic opened the second half on an 11-5 run to retake the lead, 42-41, with 14:20 remaining.

With the score tied at 50-50, the Cardinals outscored the Knights 16-5 over the next 6:42 to take a 13-point advantage with 2:59 to play. Martins chipped in 11 of the team's 16 points, including nine on three three-pointers.

Malakai Olson led Southern Virginia (6-7) with 20 points and 14 rebounds while Conner Marchant had 17 points.

Catholic continues Landmark Conference play on Saturday when it heads to Susquehanna for a 2 p.m. tip-off with the River Hawks from Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium.
