Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Juniata missed the second of two free throws with 0.3 seconds remaining as the Catholic University men's basketball team held on for a 51-50 Landmark Conference victory Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court.
The Cardinals (9-4, 2-2 LC) totaled a season-high eight blocks en route to their fifth win in the last seven against the Eagles and fourth in the last five at home.
Catholic led 51-44 following two free throws by sophomore Jake Timby with 2:31 remaining. However, those would be the team's final points of the game as Juniata scored the final six as it tried to force overtime.
Down 51-49 with three seconds remaining, the Eagles' Kohl Bernarding missed on a three-point attempt, but teammate Michael Montecalvo attempted a put back from six-feet in the middle of the paint, drawing a foul as time expired.
Looking to send the game to overtime, Montecalvo made the first free throw before missing the second where the rebound was corralled by sophomore Declan O'Sullivan to secure the victory.
Led by 10 points from Timby and seven from sophomore Jesse Hafemeister, the Cardinals led by as many as 10 points in the second half, going 4-of-10 from three-point range.
Hafemeister finished with a team-high 15 points while Timby had 13. Senior Frank Lumaj totaled four points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Juniata (8-5, 1-1 LC) was led by Evan Eisenhart's game-high 16 points while Chase Husted totaled a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Catholic travels to Moravian on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off with the Greyhounds from Johnston Hall. The Cardinals swept the season series a year ago, winning 74-51 on the road on Feb. 14, 2021.
