NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Two third-quarter goals led Christopher Newport to a 4-0 victory over the Catholic University field hockey team Wednesday at Jennings Family Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-4) were facing their third-straight road opponent who was mentioned in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll as the Captains are receiving votes.

After a scoreless first quarter, CNU tallied the first goal just under four minutes into the second when Abby Asuncion scored the first of her three goals off a long centering pass from Emma Logue.

That would be all the Captains could get as Catholic totaled five saves, including three from junior Maeve McCarthy who was making her first career start. Junior Molly McEvoy and freshman Emma Shallow also had defensive saves.

McCarthy finished with six saves while senior Maysen Elliott played the second half in goal for the Cardinals and had three.

Asuncion had a hand in both third quarter tallies for CNU (3-3), assisting on the first 10 minutes in before scoring her second goal less than two minutes later to put the Captains in front, 3-0 after three.

Asuncion finished her hat trick just 1:40 into the fourth.

Catholic wraps up its three-game road trip on Saturday when it opens Landmark Conference play at Moravian beginning at noon.

The Cardinals have won all 13 meetings against the Greyhounds since the league began in 2007 and are 26-2 against conference opponents since 2016.
