Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Rowan Quad Match

GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Catholic University volleyball team split its final two matches on Saturday at Rowan University, falling to the host Profs before sweeping Morrisville State.

ROWAN 3, CATHOLIC 0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-20)

Against Rowan (4-2), Pohl had seven kills and two block assists while Connatser added six kills. Powers totaled 12 assists and seven digs while freshman Mya Sullivan had 10 assists and five digs.

The Profs jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and never trailed as the Cardinals were limited by 10 attack errors.

Just like the first set, Rowan took an early lead in the second and led by as many as five, 15-10, but Catholic rallied to tie the set at 16-16 behind kills from Connatser, Pohl, freshman Grace Guerin and Collier before back-to-back attack errors by the Profs.

After three more ties, Rowan edged out the two-point victory on a service error by the Cardinals.

The third set featured six ties and five lead changes. With the Profs leading 15-11, Catholic rallied to within one, 15-14 on an ace by Guerin before Rowan capitalized on three-straight Cardinal errors to go in front 20-15. The hosts would seal the match with back-to-back kills by Natalie Ogden.

Kelly had 12 digs while Lumaj added three block assists.

CATHOLIC 3, MORRISVILLE STATE 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19)

The Cardinals (2-6) picked up their second win of the season against the Mustangs, posting a .365 hitting percentage with 29 kills.

Junior Brittany Connatser led the team in kills with nine while totaling a .562 hitting percentage with no errors in 16 attempts. She also added three block assists.

Freshman Courtney Pohl added seven kills, senior Mackenzie Collier had six and sophomore Amy Lumaj had five. The quartet of Connatser, Pohl, Collier and Lumaj combined for 27 kills and a .462 hitting percentage.

With the first set tied at 12-12, Catholic scored four of the next five points, including two on attack errors by Morrisville State (5-2) and one a service ace by senior Caroline Kelly. The Cardinals never let the lead slip below two en route to a 25-20 win.

The second set was back-and-forth featuring 10 ties and six lead changes before Catholic scored six of the final seven points, including the final four on service aces by junior Alycia Powers.

The Cardinals led from start to finish in the deciding third set, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage with two more aces from Powers. Catholic was also aided by six more attack errors by the Mustangs who totaled 23 in the match for a .101 hitting percentage.

Powers finished with seven service aces to along with 16 assists while Kelly led the defensive effort with 12 digs.

 

The Cardinals return to action next Friday, Sept. 17 at Mary Washington where they will take on Washington and Lee at 6 p.m.
