WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's tennis team dropped a tight Landmark Conference match to Goucher on Saturday at the Marty and Jone Dowd Family Tennis Courts, 5-4.
"The guys fought hard," said head coach Nitin Deodhar. "Playing the same team twice in four days, it is interesting to see how teams change strategies and adapt. I should have made moves and changes at certain positions. The guys did everything asked of them. This loss is on me."
To begin doubles play, freshman Allan Van Nostrand and senior Frankie Fortunati dropped a close match at No. 1 doubles, 8-5. However, the Cardinals were able to pick up a point at No. 3 doubles by default and trailed the Gophers 2-1 moving into singles.
The Cardinals picked up their first point by default at No. 6 singles before Van Nostrand dominated for the second-straight match at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Dom Mazzeo picked up the Cardinals last point at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Dominguez.
The Cardinals will have a nine-day break before returning to action in the semifinals of the 2021 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Wednesday, May 4.
