Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's lacrosse junior Nick Fanelli scored a career-high five points as the Cardinals won their fifth-straight with a 15-10 win over Scranton Saturday at Carlini Field on Senior Day.
With its fifth-straight win, Catholic (5-0, 5-0 LC) has equaled the best start to a season in program history, tying the mark set in 2010 when the team began 5-0 en route to a 12-4 record and an appearance in the Landmark Conference championship game.
Following the game, the team honored its eight seniors: Sil Argentieri, Vince Catenacci, Ryan Gilfillan, Ben Karthaus, Kevin Malone, Evan Markley, Griffin Smith and Joe Thiroway.
Fanelli finished with a career-high four goals for his third career hat-trick and first since he had three goals in an 18-4 win over Marymount (Va.) at home on Feb. 26, 2020.
Fanelli was one of 10 different Cardinals to score a goal Saturday, including sophomore Luke D'Ambrogi who also had five points with two goals and three assists.
With the score tied at 3-3 after the first quarter, Fanelli and junior Sean Baudo scored back-to-back to start the second quarter and put Catholic ahead for good.
The Royals (4-2, 4-2 LC), whose only two losses have come against the Cardinals, scored the first three goals to start the fourth quarter to pull within one at 10-9 with 9:07 remaining.
However, senior Kevin Crowley netted his first of the game just eight seconds later to start a string of third-straight tallies for Catholic and five of the final six. All five goals came from five different players, including Fanelli, D'Ambrogi, junior Cameron Dunn, and junior Grady Kuhn.
Dunn finished with two goals and one assist for a season-high three points while Crowley also had three points with one goal and two assists. In two games against the Royals this season, Crowley has totaled 10 goals and 12 points.
Sophomore Cooper DiCicco netted his first goal of the season just five seconds into the second half after winning the opening face-off and picking up the ground ball.
Defensively, the Cardinals totaled 13 caused turnovers, including three by Crowley and two each from Baudo and junior Tynan Hillery. Hillery and junior Mike McShea each picked up six ground balls while McShea won 14 faceoffs.
In goal, sophomore Nic Pezone made 10 saves, his third game out of five this season with at least 10, while senior Sean McCormick made one in his first game after joining the team earlier this week.
Catholic concludes the regular season on Wednesday when they face Elizabethtown for the first time this season. The Blue Jays and Cardinals have combined to win the last five Landmark Conference championships and lead the league in conference wins during that time with 23 and 20, respectively.
Faceoff from Carlini Field is at 7 p.m.
