Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University softball team had it's eight-game win streak snapped by No. 15 Moravian Saturday.
The Cardinals (8-2, 8-2 LC) held the lead in the sixth inning of both games, but the Greyhounds rallied to post two one-run victories, 4-3 and 5-4.
A total of 10 players recorded 22 hits for Catholic, including three doubles. Sophomore Katie Hurd threw a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Moravian 4, Catholic 3
The Cardinals started game one off strong with two runs on two hits in the top of the first. Senior Makayla Czan began the rally with a single through the left side before Hurd laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error to move Czan into scoring position. An RBI-single by senior Giselle Diaz drove in Catholic's first run.
Another sacrifice bunt by sophomore Sammy Phillips advanced Diaz and Hurd who was able to tag up and score from third after senior Allie Lajeunesse fouled out to right field.
Moravian (10-0, 10-0 LC) responded in the bottom of the second with two runs on four hits to tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Cardinals regained the lead. A total of four hits from Lajeunesse, junior Bella Ronca, sophomore Sarah Spaeth, and junior Sophie Maccarone allowed for the Cardinals to take a 3-2 lead.
However, the Greyhounds tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error.
With the game tied at 3-3, Moravian scored the winning run on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh.
Hurd took her first loss of the season, falling to 4-1 with a 1.02 ERA.
Moravian 5, Catholic 4
Game two was reminiscent of the first as Catholic held the lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The first four innings were scoreless until Moravian took a 2-0 lead on three hits and one error.
The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the six, scoring four runs on six hits. Czan lead off with a double down the right field line followed by a single from Diaz. A pair of singles by Phillips and Lajeunesse scored Diaz to tie the game at 2-2.
Senior Taylor Forgen smacked her first double of the year to drive in pinch runner Elizabeth Dew and give the team a 3-2 lead.
The sudden burst of offense forced Moravian to it's bullpen before Ronca ripped a single to left field to score Catholic's fourth and final run.
Moravian started a rally in the bottom of the inning as five Greyhounds hit five consecutive singles to score three runs and regain their one run lead, 5-4.
The Cardinals went 1-2-3 in the seventh to allow Moravian to escape with the win.
Freshman Justina Benvenuto pitched five innings and totaled two strikeouts in suffering her first loss of the season. Lajeunsse came on in relief in the sixth.
Sunday's doubleheader against Moravian has been postponed due to the forecast of rain in the area. Both teams are working on finding a mutually agreeable date to reschedule.
