Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University baseball team crushed Landmark opponent Moravian College 11-1 and 12-1 on Saturday at Robert J. Talbot Field.
Sophomore Ben Nardi was responsible for two of the four home runs against the Greyhound defense, his third of the season. He was joined by juniors Conor Casey and Peter Giombetti who both hit their first career blasts over the fence today.
Sophomore Tucker Alch threw a complete seven innings in game one for Catholic, allowing only one run to cross the plate. With a total of 12 hits against the Cardinal pitching in game two, the defense fielded everything cleanly for no errors and one run allowed.
Catholic 11, Moravian 1:
The Cardinals took the lead in game one at the bottom of the second after senior Billy Duke tripled and was driven home by classmate Tyler Shaffer's single to bring the score to 1-0. Catholic continued to build upon that lead nearly every at-bat.
Casey's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth brought the deficit to 4-0 and was followed by junior Matt Tesoriero's double to left center, putting him in scoring position. Nardi hit his first bomb of the day to score himself and Tesoriero for a 6-0 lead over the Greyhounds. A double from Giombetti scored senior Nolan Lundholm to end the inning with five runs scored on six hits and a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Moravian's only run would come at the top of the fifth after a double put a Greyhound on the basepaths followed by a pair of singles to drive him home. Catholic responded with another run in the bottom of the inning to lengthen their now 8-1 lead.
Catholic's final three runs were scattered by six hits throughout the bottom of the sixth. Senior Nick Koehn approached the plate as a pinch hitter and began the rally with a double to left field. Despite a double play by the Moravian defense, the Cardinals recorded four hits with two outs, scoring three.
Freshman Ryan Moore's single up the middle drove in Koehn, followed by classmate Tighe Watson's double to center to score Moore. Keith Campbell batted in the final run with a single to left field to bring Watson back home. With the Greyhounds being unable to score in the top of the seventh, the Cardinals took game one easily.
Alch allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk to improve his record to 2-0.
Catholic 12, Moravian 1:
Moravian's bats woke up in game two with a total of 12 hits against Catholic's pitching, but the Cardinals' strong defense would allow for just another single-run game for the Greyhounds.
A lengthy first at-bat for Catholic's offense would earn them an eight-run lead off six hits which Moravian would not catch up to. A series of two-run doubles from Giombetti, Duke and Casey gave the Cardinals a 6-0 advantage, followed by Nardi's two-run home run to end the first inning 8-0.
The hits kept rolling at the bottom of the second with another pair of doubles by Duke and Watson to score two runs. Casey's RBI-single up the middle scored the third run of the inning and 11th total to give the Cardinals a double-digit lead heading into the top of the third. Catholic's 12th and final run was the result of Giombetti's solo home run in the following inning for a 12-0 lead.
Moravian's single run was walked in at the top of the fifth to bring the score to 12-1. The Greyhounds could not convert hits into runs so the score remained until the final out was made.
Marini pitched five innings facing 26 batters for the Cardinals, earning the win and his 4-0 record. MJ Dziczkowski and Hector Navarro closed the game throwing 10 and three strikes respectively. Catholic improves its record to 7-3 to close out the weekend.
As a result of the forecast of rain, tomorrow's doubleheader hosted by Moravian has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 8. The Cardinals return to the field next Saturday, April 17 at Elizabethtown for another Landmark Conference matchup. First pitch is at 12:30 P.M.
