Men's Lacrosse Scores Record 28 Goals in Home Opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A total of 14 players had at least one goal as the Catholic University men's lacrosse team set a new team and Landmark Conference record with 28 goals in a 28-10 victory over Moravian Saturday at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (2-0, 2-0 LC), who are among those receiving votes in the USILA Division III Coaches Poll, set a new team record with 28 goals, surpassing the previous record of 26 scored in a 26-3 victory over Eastern University on March 26, 1999. It is also the most goals scored in a conference game in Landmark Conference history, besting the previous mark of 24 set by Drew in a 24-8 victory over Moravian on March 26, 2008.

Catholic, who has won six of its last seven regular season games while scoring at least 20 goals in four-straight, also totaled a Landmark Conference record 24 assists and 52 points.

Saturday marked the home debut of first-year head coach Jon Sax. After scoring 24 goals in the season opener at Scranton, the Cardinals have scored 52 goals in Sax's first two games as a college head coach, the most in the first two games under a first-time head coach in Division I, II or III since before 1991.

Junior Sean Baudo led the team with a team record 10 points, totaling five goals and five assists. He tied the league record for most points in a conference game while finishing one point shy of the overall record set by Merchant Marine's Zach Gray when he had five goals and six assists at SUNY Maritime on March 16, 2011.

Baudo recorded his 10th hat-trick in 24 career games. He currently leads the team with 16 points this season.

Reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week, senior Kevin Crowley, scored four more goals against the Greyhounds (3-2, 1-2 LC) and now leads the team with 13 in two games this season after scoring a league record nine at Scranton.

Baudo and Crowley posted two of Catholic's four hat-tricks on Saturday as juniors Jack McGorry and Archer Rymiszewski each had three goals. It was the first career hat-trick for Rymiszewski.

The Cardinals led 10-2 after the first quarter as Baudo scored three of the team's first four goals and a hand in six of the first 10 with three goals and three assists. Crowley also had three goals in the first quarter to secure his third career hat-trick in seven games as a Cardinal.

Eight of Catholic's 14 goal scorers registered their first of the season while sophomore Kevin Ortlieb and freshman Luke Geraghty each netted the first of their career.

A total of 18 players had at least one point for the Cardinals, including senior Joe Thiroway who picked up the first of his career.

Defensively, Catholic forced Moravian into 33 turnovers with junior Tynan Hillery leading the way with four caused turnovers. He also had four ground balls.

Sophomore Cooper DiCicco had two caused turnovers while winning 10-of-14 faceoffs and picking up seven ground balls.

In goal, sophomore Nic Pezone made six saves to earn his sixth career win in 10 starts.

The Cardinals travel to Susquehanna on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. faceoff with the River Hawks in Selinsgrove, Pa.
