Cards' Comeback Falls Short in Championship Loss at Scranton

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. - Catholic University women's basketball sophomore Erin Doherty scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals fell at Scranton Saturday in the Landmark Conference championship game, 56-55.

Playing in their seventh conference title game in the last 10 years, Catholic (7-3) trailed by as many as 16, 41-25 with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter, before outscoring the Royals 30-15 over the final 11 minutes.

Scranton (7-1), whose only loss of the season came at home to Catholic on Feb. 21, led by 11 following a three-pointer by Maddie Harnett with 3:52 to play.

Led by four points each from Doherty and sophomore Rachel Bussanich, the Cardinals pulled within three, 55-52 with 1:04 left. After holding the Royals scoreless on two attempts from inside the paint, Catholic had a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds remaining.

However, on their ensuing possession, the Cardinals missed two attempts from the free throw line before Scranton grabbed the rebound and made one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game, 56-52 with 12 seconds to play.

Junior Amanda Johnson hit her third three-pointer of the game with two seconds left to pull Catholic within one, but following a timeout, the Royals successfully inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to secure their sixth consecutive title and ninth overall.

After scoring a career-high 24 points in the semifinals against Drew, Doherty posted her second career 20-point game, finishing 8-of-18 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. She also added six rebounds and four steals.

Johnson totaled 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and a career-high four blocks. She was 7-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-6 from behind the arc. In three games against Scranton this season, she averaged 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds.

Bussanich scored six points while sophomore Amelia Baldo had four points, five rebounds and five assists for the Cardinals who were just 10-of-22 from the free throw line.

Harnett led Scranton with 16 points while Bridget Monaghan had 12.

The Royals led from start to finish, including 19-10 after the first quarter and 26-21 at halftime.
