SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic University women's tennis team opened its season with a 5-4 road win at Susquehanna Saturday.
The Cardinals (1-0, 1-0 LC), winners of three-straight dating back to last season, were led by sophomores Abby Cassidy, sophomore Colleen McLaughlin and senior Grace Connell as each picked up two wins on the day.
McLaughlin and Connell partnered for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles while Cassidy and junior Brooke Simonson won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, to give the Catholic a 2-1 lead headed into singles.
The Cardinals won the first three singles matches, sealing the victory at No. 4 when Cassidy posted a straight sets win over Chelsea Kneedler, 6-1, 6-2.
Connell started things off with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 before McLaughlin gave Catholic match point with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Grace Tepes at No. 3.
The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, April 3 against Juniata at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts.
