Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. - The Catholic University softball team completed a four-game sweep over Drew University 6-3 and 4-3 in extra innings on Sunday, March 21.
Game 1: Catholic 6, Drew 3
The top of the lineup gave the Cardinals their first run of the day when senior center fielder Makayla Czan lead off with a double to right field and was driven home by senior shortstop Giselle Diaz's RBI-single. Senior Taylor Forgen advanced Diaz to second on a groundout to first base, then sophomore catcher Sammy Phillips' RBI-single put Catholic up 2-0 in the top of the first.
A double by senior right fielder McKenzie Plante along with a fielding error gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead by the bottom of top of the second. The Rangers answered with their first run scored in the bottom of the third. Plante led off the fourth inning in a big way when she hit her first collegiate home run down the left field line, bringing the score to 4-1.
Catholic's final two runs came in the top of the fifth with another solo homerun from Phillips, her first of the season. Plante reached first on a fielder's choice to steal second and then scored unearned after Drew committed a throwing error.
Despite two runs scored on four hits, Drew was unable to catch up to Catholic's early lead. Six Cardinals totaled nine hits while sophomore pitcher Katie Hurd took the win with no recorded walks and three strikeouts.
Game 2: Catholic 4, Drew 3
With freshman pitcher Justina Benvenuto making her collegiate debut in the circle, the Rangers took an early lead at the top of the first with two runs scored on one hit.
Neither Drew nor Catholic scored anymore runs until the top of the sixth when a pair of singles by Forgen and sophomore third baseman Sarah Spaeth put the Cardinals in scoring position. Czan ripped a single through to the left side, driving Forgen home for Catholic's first run. Drew lengthened their lead by another run in the bottom of the sixth bringing the score to 3-1.
An RBI-double by Phillips drove in Diaz, bringing the deficit to just one run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior first baseman Allie Lajeunesse singled to advance Phillips who was then able to score Catholic's tying run as a result of a fielding error.
Moving into extra innings and at the top of the lineup, Diaz reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second, putting herself into scoring position. A single to left center from Phillips scored Diaz, giving Catholic the 4-3 lead. Lajeunesse took the mound in the bottom of the seventh, facing only six batters in 1.2 innings pitched. Two pop ups and a strikeout wrapped up game two to give her the win and secure the sweep for the Cardinals.
Catholic softball will return to action on Friday, April 2 when they host the Eagles of Juniata at 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M. With fans not allowed at any Catholic Athletics home event due to Landmark Conference policy, fans can watch the game live on the Landmark Digital Network.
