Catholic Takes Two from Drew in Conference Home-Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University softball team swept Drew University 4-1, 7-2 in a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 after a 373-day hiatus.

Game 1: Catholic 4, Drew 1

The Cardinals scored first in the bottom of the first with a pair of doubles from seniors Makayla Czan and Giselle Diaz. Classmate Taylor Forgen singled to right center to score Diaz, bringing Catholic's lead to 2-0.

The next few innings remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Rangers put up their only run as a result of a fielding error, stolen base and an RBI-double.

Catholic answered back in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a single through the left side from sophomore pitcher Katie Hurd. Sophomore Heather Berberich entered as a pinch runner and was moved into scoring position on a single produced by Diaz. Another single by Forgen resulted in another pair of runs crossing the plate, bringing the Cardinal's lead to 4-0.

Despite putting six hits on the board, the Rangers could not get more runs across the plate. Hurd took the win in the circle, scattering six hits over seven innings.

Game 2: Catholic 7, Drew 2

The bats came alive in game two when seven Cardinal's produced 10 hits, four of which came in the first inning. Czan began the rally with a single up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Hurd. Diaz reached first on a fielding error, advancing Czan all the way home giving the Cards the 1-0 advantage.

A pair of singles from Forgen and first baseman Juliet Lodes put two runners on the basepaths for the Cardinals. Sammy Phillips, the designated player, stepped up with a double to left center to score Forgen. Junior second baseman Bella Ronca grounded out to second with an RBI bringing in Lodes to bring the deficit to 4-0 at the bottom of the first.

Drew recorded two runs with two hits and smart baserunning in the top of the third inning, but they were unable to produce any more offense for the rest of the game. Catholic scored the rest of their runs in the bottom of the third with an RBI-double from sophomore third baseman Sarah Spaeth, an unearned run from junior pinch runner Elizabeth Dew and another single from Czan.

Senior pitcher Allie Lajeunesse took her first win of the season with five strikeouts and two runs over seven innings.

The Cardinals hit the road tomorrow to face Drew away, Sunday March 21 at 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M.
