Box Score HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Catholic University women's basketball sophomore Rachel Bussanich posted her first career double double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals to a 79-71 road victory over Juniata Tuesday inside Memorial Gymnasium.
Catholic (1-1, 1-1 LC) snapped a two-game, regular-season, road losing streak that dated back almost exactly one year to the day in a 65-52 loss at No. 14 Scranton on Feb. 8, 2020.
The 2020 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year, Bussanich led four Cardinal starters who scored in double figures, including junior Amanda Johnson who had a game-high 17 points. Johnson just missed her second-straight double double, and second overall, as she had nine rebounds.
Bussanich totaled five points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter as Catholic outscored the Eagles 19-8 to rally from a 63-60 deficit after three.
The Cardinals scored the first eight points in the fourth, including four from Bussanich and two from Johnson, to take a 68-63 lead with 7:21 remaining. Johnson's jumper with 9:11 to play gave Catholic a 64-63 advantage, its first lead since the 1:40 mark of the first quarter.
After a basket by Taylor Vrabel cut the Eagles' deficit to four, 73-69 with 5:33 left, neither team would score again until a free throw by sophomore Erin Doherty with 1:25 remaining. During the drought that lasted 4:08, both teams were 0-for-5 from the floor and combined for four turnovers.
However, the Cardinals scored four of their final six points from the free throw line while holding Juniata to just two to secure the win.
Over the final five-and-a-half minutes, Catholic's defense limited the Eagles (0-3, 0-3 LC) to just one made field goal on nine attempts while forcing two turnovers.
The Cardinals also held Juniata's leading scorer, Gracie Stauffer, to just 12 points and six attempts. She entered the game averaging 22.0 points through her first two contests.
Doherty finished with 14 points, six rebounds and a career-high six assists while sophomore Amelia Baldo also added six assists to go along with 13 points, just one shy of her career high. Sophomore Erin Thompson added eight points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench.
Catholic travels to Moravian on Friday, Feb. 12. Tip-off from Johnston Hall is at 5 p.m.
