Hafemeister Leads Cardinals in 69-67 Home Loss to Scranton

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball freshman Jesse Hafemeister posted his second career 20-point game, but a three-point play with 18 seconds left allowed Scranton to escape with a 69-67 victory Sunday on Franny Murray Court.

The Cardinals (4-2, 4-2 LC) led by eight with 2:29 remaining before the Royals scored 11 of the final 12 points.

A layup by Hafemeister put Catholic ahead 66-58, but marked its last basket from floor. The team missed its final three shots, including a three-pointer by freshman Jake Timby with five seconds left and the Cardinals trailing by one, 68-67.

Trailing by two with 18 seconds remaining, Logan Bailey converted a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 68-68 while drawing the fifth foul from sophomore Pat Buckley.

Following a Catholic timeout, Bailey converted the ensuing free throw to give Scranton (4-2, 4-2 LC) its first lead since the 9:36 mark of the second half.

The Royals led for just 2:41 in the contest which featured eight ties and four lead changes. The second half had seven ties, but the three-point play by Bailey marked the only lead change.

Hafemeister finished with 20 points and a career-high nine rebounds while Timby had 10 points, tying his career high set in the season opener at Drew.

Freshman Thomas Abato totaled six points and seven rebounds, both career highs, while sophomore Jack Kouba had a season-high eight points and career-high seven rebounds.

As a team, the Cardinals outrebounded the Royals, 48-35.

Catholic wraps up the regular season with two home games this week beginning on Tuesday when it hosts Juniata beginning at 7 p.m.
