Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's basketball junior Amanda Johnson totaled 19 points seven rebounds and three steals, but Scranton used a strong second half to post a 63-46 victory over the Cardinals Friday on Franny Murray Court.
Catholic (4-2, 4-2 LC) suffered their first loss in the last five games and lost to the Royals at home for the first time in the last four seasons dating back to Jan. 20, 2018.
Johnson scored a season-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting which included 3-of-7 from three-point range. She was just one point shy of her career high set at Drew on Feb. 22, 2020.
Scranton (3-0, 3-0 LC) jumped out to 12-4 lead in the game's first 3:31 before the Cardinals used an 11-3 run to take their first lead, 17-15 with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter.
The Royals pushed their lead back to eight, 28-20 with 1:30 to play in the second, before a three-pointer by Johnson cut the deficit to five at the break.
Johnson scored 10 of her 19 points in the opening half, shooting 50 percent from the floor, going 4-of-8 and 2-of-4 from three-point range.
With the game tied at 28-28, Scranton scored eight-straight points to take its largest lead, getting four points each from Hannah Angelini and Bridget Monaghan. Monaghan had 14 points and eight rebounds through the first three quarters to lead the Royals.
The run proved to be the difference as the vistitors took its eight-point advantage into the fourth and extended it to as many as 17 which proved to be the final margin after Angelini converted all three free throws of a three-shot foul with 2:04 to play.
Angelini scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth, including six from the free throw line where she was 6-for-6.
Despite committing 22 turnovers, Scranton held a 43-31 edge in rebounds and limited the Cardinals to just 30.4 percent shooting.
Sophomore Sammie McCarter totaled eight points, three rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes off the bench while reigning Landmark Conference Player of the Week Rachel Bussanich had three points and six rebounds. Sophomore Erin Doherty had six points, three rebounds and three steals.
Catholic looks to snap a four-game road losing streak against the Royals on Sunday. Tip-off from John Long Center is at 4 p.m.
