Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - A layup by sophomore Rachel Bussanich with eight seconds remaining gave the Catholic University women's basketball team its fourth-straight win Tuesday night, 69-68 over Juniata on Franny Murray Court.
The Cardinals (4-1, 4-1 LC) have also won four consecutive games against the Eagles and 13 of their 16 at home over the last two seasons.
After a jumper by Madison Colyer with 12 seconds remaining in the contest gave Juniata its first lead since the 6:40 mark of the first quarter, Catholic called a timeout to advance the ball to midcourt and setup a play to regain the lead.
Off the inbound, junior Amanda Johnson found Bussanich underneath for the lay in with 6.2 seconds to play.
On the enusing possession, the Eagles' Cassie Mock tried a pull-up jumper that was blocked by Johnson before Bussanich corralled the rebound to preserve the win for the Cardinals.
Johnson finished the game with 12 points and nine rebounds as she continues to flirt with averaging a double double, averaging 14.2 points and 8.8 rebounds. She has scored at least 10 points in four out of five games this season and totaled at least nine rebounds in four. Tonight, she also added three assists, three blocks and three steals.
Bussanich, who was named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week on Monday, is also almost averaging a double double with 13.4 points and 8.8 rebounds. Tonight, she had seven points and nine rebounds while adding five steals.
As a team, Catholic totaled 14 steals and eight blocks which helped lead to 22 Juniata turnovers and 28 points off turnovers for the Cardinals.
Sophomore Erin Doherty, who scored a career-high 19 points, added three rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Freshman Sarah White also had a career night, finishing wiht 11 points, including nine from three-point range where she was 3-for-6.
Gracie Stauffer led the Eagles (0-4, 0-4 LC) with 17 points and 16 rebounds, including 13 points and eight rebounds in the second half as Juniata rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit.
Catholic wraps up its three-game homestand on Friday when it welcomes rival Scranton to Franny Murray Court. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
