WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Frank Lumaj totaled 11 points and eight rebounds as the Cardinals hung on to beat Scranton Saturday on Franny Murray Court, 75-73.

Catholic (7-1, 1-0 LC) snapped a four-game losing streak in Landmark Conference openers, posting its first win since an 84-81 win over Drew at home on Dec. 3, 2016.

Lumaj scored a career-high 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting. He was also 5-of-8 from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jesse Hafemeister totaled the fifth 20-point game of his career and third this season with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds. The Cardinals are 4-1 when he scores at least 20 points.

The first-half which featured nine ties and six lead changes. Scranton (3-4, 0-1 LC) led 22-16 with 6:20 remaining before a 12-3 run gave Catholic a 28-25 advantage with 2:44 to play.

Sophomore Colby Martins scored five points during the run while Hafemeister added three.

Hafemeister had 11 first-half points as the Cardinals led 34-32 at the break.

With the score tied for the 11th time at 49-49, Catholic used a 12-4 run to take an eight-point advantage before stretching it to nine, 73-64, with 12 seconds remaining following two free throws by sophomore Jake Melady.

Melady added two more free throws with six seconds remaining which proved to be crucial as the Royals scored nine points, all from Jack Brockett, in the final eight seconds to provide the final margin.

Melady finished with 10 points while sophomore Tommy Kelly had 15. The Cardinals committed just eight turnovers while scoring 20 points off 19 Scranton miscues.

Catholic returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 11 at Bridgewater (Va.). Game time is at 2 p.m.
