Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - Four players scored in double figures as the Catholic University women's basketball team used a dominant fourth quarter en route to a 66-51 victory over Salisbury Tuesday.
With their second win in the last three games against the Sea Gulls, the Cardinals (3-0) have won three-straight games to open the season for the second time in the last three years. They started the 2019-20 season with eighth consecutive wins.
Senior Amanda Johnson led the team with a season-high 15 points and nine rebounds, just missing her first double double of the season and the third of her career. Tonight marked the sixth time in her career that she finished just one rebound shy of a double double.
Johnson went 8-of-8 from the free throw line while Catholic was a perfect 20-of-20 as a team to set a new school record for free throw percentage.
The last time the Cardinals had at least 10 free throw attempts without a miss was back on Nov. 19, 2014 when it went 10-for-10 against Salisbury at home. They were also 11-for-11 at Juniata on Feb. 9, 2008.
The Sea Gulls (0-1) held a 45-44 lead entering the fourth quarter before taking a 47-46 advantage on a layup by Lauren Fortescue with 8:29 remaining. Led by three points each from Johnson and junior Rachel Bussanich, Catholic used an 8-0 run to take the lead for good with 6:53 to play.
The Cardinals shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the quarter, going 8-for-14 and outscoring the home team, 22-5. The quartet of Johnson, Bussanich, senior Luca Mamula and junior Erin Doherty combined to score all 22 of the team's points with Mamula and Doherty scoring six each.
Defensively, Catholic held Salisbury to just 3-of-13 shooting, including 0-of-6 from three-point range. The Sea Gulls also missed both of their free throw attempts.
Doherty joined Johnson with a game-high 15 points while Bussanich had 13 points and eight rebounds. Mamula finished with 10 points.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday at the eighth annual Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Marymount (Va.). Catholic will take on Washington and Lee at 7:30 p.m. following the host Saints and Eastern at 5:30 p.m.
