Cards Pick Up First Conference Win, 3-1 Over Goucher

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University volleyball sophomore Olivia Blondin had a career-high 11 kills as the Cardinals posted a 3-1 win over Goucher Wednesday on Franny Murray Court.

Playing at home for the first time since Sept. 8, Catholic (4-15, 1-2 LC) posted its sixth-straight win against the Gophers and improved to 15-1 in the series since the two teams joined the Landmark Conference in 2007.

Blondin also posted a .375 hitting percentage as the Cardinals hit .239 as a team, their second-best mark of the season.

Freshman Grace Guerin tied her career high with seven kills, equaling the mark she set against Eastern on Sept. 25. She also had a .400 hitting percentage while freshman Courtney Pohl had nine kills, one shy of her career high, and a .300 hitting percentage.

Six Cardinals had at least five kills, including eight from junior Brittany Connatser and five each from senior Mackenzie Collier and sophomore Amy Lumaj.

Guerin totaled five of her kills in the first set as Catholic used a 6-2 run to rally from an 8-5 deficit and take an 11-10 lead. Trailing 14-12, the Cardinals scored 10 of the next 11 points, including five on Gopher errors, to take a commanding 22-15 advantage en route to a 25-19 victory.

Catholic trailed 5-0 in the second set before taking its first lead at 14-13 on a kill by Blondin. The set featured 10 ties and four lead changes as the two teams would go back-and-forth before the Cardinals took a 22-20 lead following an attack error by Goucher (4-11, 0-3 LC).

However, the Gophers scored five of the final six points, including two on service aces, to even the match at one set apiece, 25-23.

After a tightly contested first two sets that saw 17 ties and seven lead changes combined, Catholic took command in the last two. The team jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third, matching their largest lead six times en route to a 25-19 victory.

In the fourth set, the Cardinals totaled 13 kills and a .423 hitting percentage while leading by as many as 10 on their way to a decisive 25-15 win to clinch the match.

Collier added a team-high 14 digs to go along with her five kills while freshman Brynne Burgess added 12, two shy of her career high. Senior Caroline Kelly had 11 digs to move into ninth on the program's career list. She now has 1,374 in 78 career matches, surpassing Katie Chefalas who had 1,369 from 2009-12.

In addition to her five kills, Lumaj added five total blocks as Catholic had 11 as a team. Freshman Mya Sullivan totaled 21 assists and seven digs while junior Alycia Powers had 19 assists.

The Cardinals travel to Stevenson on Saturday for a tri-match with the Mustangs and Virginia Weslyan beginning at 11 a.m.
