Cardinals Drop Second Five-Set Thriller to Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University volleyball junior Brittany Connatser totaled 13 kills, five digs and three blocks as the Cardinals fell to Marymount (Va.) in five sets Monday on Franny Murray Court.

Catholic (4-18) suffered its first loss in three matches at home this season and its second in five sets against the Saints this season after Marymount edged out a 3-2 win at home back on September 6.

In two matches against the Saints this season, Connatser has totaled 40 kills for an average of 4.0 kills per set, while adding seven digs and four blocks.

Connatser had five kills in the opening set as the Cardinals rallied from three five-point deficits, the last of which came at 17-12. Led by three kills from Connatser, Catholic scored six of the next seven points to tie the set at 18-18. With the teams deadlocked for the fourth time at 20-20, the Cardinals scored five of the final six points, including three on kills by freshman Courtney Pohl.

Marymount (7-9) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set and stretched it to as many as 11 before Catholic pulled within three at 23-20 on a kill by Pohl. However, the Saints evened the match with back-to-back points on an attack error by the Cardinals and a kill by Caylee Shelton.

Trailing 11-8 to start the third set, Marymount scored nine consecutive points, including the first seven on Catholic errors, to take a six-point advantage. The Cardinals managed to get within three, 21-18, but four-straight points, with three on errors and one on a service ace, sealed the win for the Saints.

Led by five kills and six digs from senior Mackenzie Collier and a .353 team hitting percentage, Catholic forced a fifth and deciding set with a 10-point win in the fourth. With the set tied for the fifth time at 8-8, a kill by freshman Mya Sullivan sparked a 5-0 run to give the Cardinals a five-point lead. They extended to as many as nine, sealing the win with a service ace from junior Alycia Powers and back-to-back kills by Collier and freshman Grace Guerin.

Marymount never trailed in the fifth set, taking a 6-3 lead before Catholic tied it three times, the last coming at 12-12. However, the Saints edged out their third five-set win of the season by scoring three of the final four points with match point coming on a kill by Kaitlyn Doyle.

Collier finished with six kills and 16 digs while Sullivan had five kills, 20 assists and seven digs. Defensively, sophomore Amy Lumaj totaled eight blocks and senior Caroline Kelly had 26 of the team's 75 digs.

The Cardinals continue their four-match homestand on Wednesday when they host a Landmark Conference contest against No. 12 Juniata on Franny Murray Court beginning at 7 p.m.
