Cardinals Sweep Second Day of Spring Break

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – A total of 23 hits between both games gave the Cardinals their first sweep of the season on the second day of spring break.

 Game 1: Catholic 6, Wheaton (Mass.) 3

Strong pitching performances and clutch hits gave the Cardinals their first win of day two of The Spring Games. Junior centerfielder Makayla Czan led the lineup when she went three for four with two doubles. Freshman pitcher Katie Hurd recorded four strikeouts, allowing no walks and six hits in six innings pitched.

Catholic started out on a strong note in the top of the first with Czan reaching second on a double to right center and was scored by senior Sabrina Scott with her own double to put the Cards up 1-0. Freshman catcher Sammy Phillips switched places with Scott with the third double of the inning, closing out the first at 2-0.

A throwing error gave the Lyons an unearned run during their first at bat to bring the score to 2-1. The second inning proved huge for the Cards when sophomore second baseman Bella Ronca doubled on her first at bat of the day to put herself in scoring position. Czan moved Ronca to third on a single to left field when Scott produced yet another hit to score two runs for Catholic, bringing the score to 4-1 at the end of the second.

After three scoreless innings, Czan hit her second double of the day for an RBI in the top of the sixth. Wheaton responded with two runs scored in the bottom of the inning, which would be their last against the Cards. Freshman third baseman Sarah Spaeth put up Catholic's final run with a double to the left side to score sophomore Elizabeth Dew in the top of the seventh.

Game 2: Catholic 8, Bates 6

In game two against Bates, Catholic put up 12 hits including Hurd's first collegiate homerun and Scott's second of her senior season. Senior pitcher Claire Sturek threw 6.2 innings on the mound with four strikeouts.

Bates was the first to score to leave the score 1-0 until the Cards put up two as a result of Hurd's two-run homerun to bring the score 2-1 at the bottom of the third. Ronca recorded an RBI in the fourth to bring Dew home

Scott led off the fifth with a solo homerun, the first of four hits put up in the inning. After a series of walks that put senior Kacie Badolato and Spaeth on first and second, junior Giselle Diaz singled up the middle for one RBI. Ronca repeated with an RBI-single to score Spaeth which left Czan the opportunity to double and drive home Diaz, bringing the score 6-1.

In the final two innings, Bates started to come back after scoring five runs on six hits to trail Catholic by just two runs. Bates' rally did not prove to be enough as they could not bring in the tying run left on base against Allie Lajeunesse's closing performance at the end of the top of the seventh.
