Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - A sock trick by Catholic University men's lacrosse sophomore Jack McGorry highlighted 15 different scorers for the Cardinals who posted a 22-11 victory over Mary Washington Saturday at Carlini Field.
Catholic (3-4) won its third game out the last four overall and third in the last four against the Eagles.
The Cardinals' 22 goals were the second-most in program history and their first 20-goal game since March 8, 2016 when they beat Beloit at Cardinal Stadium, 21-10. The team record for goals in a game is 26 set in a 26-3 win over Eastern on March 20, 1999 in just the 19th game in program history.
McGorry was one of three players to score six points for Catholic. Sophomore Sean Baudo had four goals and two assists while junior Kevin Crowley had three goals and three assists.
McGorry is the first Cardinal to have at least six goals in a game since Baudo had six goals in a 15-13 win over Berry on March 13, 2019.
The Cardinals' starting attack and midfield combined for 28 points with 16 goals and 12 assists. Sophomore Joey Rockovich finished with one goal and four assists and has 20 assists in just seven games this season.
Catholic scored the first four goals of the game with McGorry scoring twice on assists from Rockovich as the Cards led 4-0 with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter. McGorry completed his hat trick with 6:49 left in the opening period as Catholic built a 6-2 lead after one.
Catholic scored the first four goals of the second quarter and the first four of the third to take a commanding 16-3 advantage with 5:39 to play. Eight different Cardinals scored at least one goal while McGorry, Baudo and Crowley all had hat tricks and combined for 11 goals.
Freshmen Will McDermott and Cooper DiCicco each netted their first career goals in the fourth quarter as Catholic stretched its lead to as many as 14.
The Cardinals outshot the Eagles 52-33 and won 22-of-36 faceoffs. Sophomore Mike McShea won 17-of-23 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls. Defensively, sophomores Matthew Clohessy and Brendan Dulin each had two caused turnovers while freshman Nic Pezone made four first-half saves.
Pezone was one of five goalies to make an appearance for the Cardinals as senior Alex Mulyk stopped three shots and freshman Colin McDonnell made the first two saves of his career.
Catholic heads to Clearwater, Florida where it will take on Wooster at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
