Third Quarter Outburst Carries Cards Past Wooster, 20-8

Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse scored 17 of the game's final 21 goals, including tallies from 12 different goals scorers as the Cardinals posted a 20-8 victory over Wooster Wednesday at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex.

In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Catholic (4-4) posted its fourth win in its last five contests while scoring 20 goals for the second-straight game.

Combined with Saturday's 22-11 win over Mary Washington at home, the Cardinals have scored 42 goals over their last two games, the most in back-to-back games in program history. The previous mark was 38 when the team defeated Medaille, 19-2, on March 9, 2001 and Misericordia, 19-1, on March 11, 2001.

Sophomore Sean Baudo totaled five goals and six points, one shy of his career high in both. In last year's spring break game on the same field, Baudo finished with six goals and seven points in a 15-13 win over Berry.

Sophomore Joey Rockovich added five points with two goals and three assists to extend his regular season point streak to 22 games. He leads the team with 34 points and 23 assists.

Wooster (2-3) scored the game's first goal and led 4-3 with 9:20 remaining in the second quarter before Catholic outscored the Fighting Scots 17-4 over the final 40 minutes.

The Cardinals led 7-5 at the half before outscoring Wooster 9-0 in the third quarter to take a commanding 11 goal advantage. Baudo had two goals and one assist while Rockovich had one goal and one assist.

Catholic added four more goals in the fourth, including the first of the season for senior Griffin Smith, freshman Jack Micco and sopohomore Walter Grabeklis. Sophomore Archer Rymiszewski also netted his first goal of the season in the first quarter.

Senior Ted Huertas also picked up his first point of the season with a second quarter assist to Rockovich.

The Cardinals tied a season high with 53 shots and had 45 ground balls, one shy of their season best. They also forced 27 turnovers, 17 of which were caused, including three by Smith and sophomore Collin Stein.

Freshman Nic Pezone made seven saves before giving way to senior Alex Mulyk who had nine over the final 24 minutes.

Catholic returns home where it will face another first time opponent in Southwestern on Saturday at Carlini Field. Faceoff is at 1 p.m.
