Cardinals Come Up Short at Scranton in Semis

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Catholic men's lacrosse season came to a close on Thursday evening as they fell 16-8 to Scranton in the Landmark Conference Semifinals. 

The Royals scored the first two goals of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead into the second quarter, but Catholic responded early in the second with goals from Logan Farrington and Victor Rosado. Scranton would score the next three goals, getting two from Riley Kahill before Brady McMahon finished off a Billy Burton feed to make it 5-3 with 4:32 left in the half. The Royals would add a sixth first-half goal with 3:01 to play. 

The Royals scored the first goal of the second half, but Ryan Carickhoff lasered one home with 12:42 to play in the third, pulling Catholic back within three. Scranton would outscore Catholic 4-1 over the remainder of the period, building an 11-5 lead despite a Mike Mulligan goal with 1:22 left in the period. 

Matt Moore and Burton scored back-to-back goals in the fourth, pulling Catholic back within six, but the Royals would extend the lead up to nine before Rosado added the final goal of the evening with 2:04 to play. 

With the late goal, Rosado broke Kevin Crowley's program record for points in a season, totaling 76. Rosado scored 39 goals and handed out a program record 37 assists this season, earning him Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. 

Ryan Macksoud won 15 face-offs on Thursday night, breaking the program record for face-off wins in a season with 274. He also added seven ground balls while Mason Russo grabbed four and caused two turnovers for Catholic. Mike Tayloe added three more ground balls and one caused turnover to his career numbers in the loss. Liam Daly added 11 saves, giving him 137 for the season. It was his ninth game this season with at least 10 saves.
