WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Collin Hartmann scored 17 points, including the final three as his three-pointer with 1.0 second remaining gave the Cardinals a 70-67 victory over Elizabethtown Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court.
Catholic (8-12, 4-5 LC) posted its third win in the last four games and second in the last three at home. The Cards also improved to 6-1 against the Blue Jays on Franny Murray Court.
Hartmann's game-winner caps a furious five-game stretch in which the Cardinals went 3-2 and had three games decided on the final possession. Both losses came by just three points where the team had a chance to tie or win the game on its final possession, including a 53-50 loss at Elizabethtown on January 22.
Just six points separated Catholic from a potential five-game win streak. As a result, the team finds itself tied for fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings with Elizabethtown, only one game out of the fourh and final spot in the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship with five games remaining.
Hartmann finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, both team-highs, just missing his second career double double this season. He had 14 points and 10 rebounds in a 75-61 victory over Misericordia on December 28.
Hartmann scored 11 of his points in the second half as the Cardinals outscored the Blue Jays, 41-34.
The second half featured nine ties and one lead change. Hartmann totaled five points during a 12-0 Catholic run to erase a nine-point deficit with 13:58 to play and take a 49-46 lead on two free throws by senior Arvelle Jones.
Despite eight ties over the final 11 minutes, the Cards would never trail again.
However, Hartmann's heroics were needed to overcome the play of Elizabethtown senior Ethan DuBois. On three separate occassions, including the last time with 28 seconds remaining, he answered with a three-pointer to tie the game immediately after Catholic pushed its lead to three.
DuBois finished the game with 21 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and was a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point range.
Jones finished with eight points and three rebounds, both season-highs, while senior Ben Reese also added a season-high six points and six rebounds. Led by Jones and Reese, Catholic totaled 26 points off the bench.
A total of nine players scored at least five points for the Cardinals, inlcuding junior Justin Pryor and sophomore David Angelo who each had nine points.
Catholic continues its push for a playoff spot on Saturday when it travels to Scranton. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. The Royals outscored the Cardinals by 15 in the second half en route to a 74-64 victory on January 18.
