Hayes Joins Elite as Cards Fall at Drew in Season Finale

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. - In the final game of his career, Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes totaled 22 points and 15 rebounds as the Cardinals concluded the 2019-20 season with a 78-70 road loss to Drew on Saturday at Baldwin Gymnasium.

The Cardinals (8-17, 4-10 LC) fell for just the third time in their last nine road games against the Rangers.

Hayes, who finished the season with double doubles in three of his last four games, posted his 10th double double of the season and the 25th of his career.

Hayes finishes his career with 1,030 points and 811 rebounds, becoming just the seventh player in program history with at least 1,000 points and 800 rebounds. He joins Bill Leahy, Bob Adrion, Jason Banzhaf, Matt Hilleary, John Douglas and Kevin Morrison.

With 1,030 points, Hayes finishes 43rd on the program's all-time scoring list behind Chris Conefry who had 1,035 in just two seasons from 1991-93.

With the game tied at 10-10 with 13:32 remaining in the first half following a jumper by senior Thomas Huerter, Drew used a 9-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 9:40 to play.

Catholic answered by scoring the next eight consecutive points to pull within one with 6:59 to play, but Rangers closed the half by scoring 14 of the final 17 points to take a 33-21 halftime lead.

The Cardinals also pulled within one, 44-43, with 12:52 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer by Huerter and later tied the game at 59-59 with 3:31 left on a three-pointer by freshman Jack Kouba.

Two free throws by Hayes tied the game against at 61-61, but the Rangers (20-5, 11-3 LC) outscored Catholic 17-9 over the last three minutes, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line over the final 1:04.

Hayes totaled 18 points and nine rebounds in the second half as the Cardinals came close to upsetting the Rangers who posted their second-straight 20-win season and finished the regular season 13-3 at home. With the win, Drew secured the No. 2 seed in next week's Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship.

Huerter finished his final collegiate game with his first career double double, totaling 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. He also had 10 rebounds against the Rangers back on December 7.

In his final game, senior Arvelle Jones tied his career-high with 10 points, tying the mark he set last Saturday against Susquehanna on Senior Day.

Sophomore Jalen Nougues also posted his best game as a Cardinal, totaling eight points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes, all career highs.

Saturday's game also marked the final one in the careers of seniors Collin Hartmann and Ben Reese. Hartmann was unable to play due to injury while Reese had two points.
