Box Score TOWSON, Md. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes became the 46th player in program history to score 1,000 career points, but Goucher outscored the Cardinals 21-6 over the final eight minutes to post an 86-70 victory Wednesday night at the Decker Center.
The Cardinals (8-16, 4-9 LC) fell for just the second time in 14 road games against the Gophers.
Hayes is the second player to score his 1,000th career point in as many seasons after Andre Mitchell '19 did so in a 78-74 victory over Susquehanna on Jan. 19, 2019.
Hayes scored his 1,000th point on a free throw with 1:57 remaining in the first half. He now has 1,008 points in 94 career games and sits just one behind Bill Dankos who scored 1,009 points from 1977-81.
Hayes, who posted his ninth double double of the season and 24th of his career with 18 points and 16 rebounds, also has 796 career rebounds. With four more, he would become just the seventh player in program history with 1,000 points and at least 800 rebounds.
Hayes totaled 15 points and eight rebounds in the first half, including eight points over the final 3:41 as Catholic used a 13-5 run to overcome a seven-point deficit and take a 40-39 halftime lead.
Following a three-pointer by freshman Jack Kouba, Goucher held a slim 65-64 lead with 8:05 remaining before scoring 21 of the final 27 points to post just its second win in 12 home games this season.
The Gophers (6-18, 3-10 LC) had three players finish with at least 23 points as Cameron Issacs, Dwayne Morton and Pat Goralski combined for 75. Playing in the final home game of their careers, Morton totaled 25 points while Goralski added 23. The duo also had nine rebounds apiece while Morton was 7-of-9 from three-point range.
Junior Justin Pryor finished with 14 points for the Cardinals, one shy of his career high. He scored 12 points in the second half, going 5-of-8 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
Kouba finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Catholic concludes its season on Saturday when it travels to Madison, New Jersey to take on Drew. Tip-off from Baldwin Gymnasium is at 2 p.m. The Cardinals have won 20 of 27 meetings against the Rangers since joining the Landmark Conference.
