Hayes Posts Eighth Double Double in 67-51 Loss at Juniata

Box Score

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds, but a 15-2 run over the final five minutes carried Juniata to a 67-51 victory Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Cardinals (8-14, 4-7 LC), who fell for the first time in the last four games against the Eagles, are now three games out of the fourth and final spot in the 2020 Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship with three remaining.

Hayes posted his eighth double double of the season and 23rd of his career. He was the lone player in double figures for the Cards as freshman Jack Kouba finished with eight points.

Playing without senior and second-leading scorer Collin Hartmann due to injury, Catholic was held to its lowest point total since a 53-50 loss at Elizabethtown on January 22.

Following a three-pointer by sophomore David Angelo, the Cardinals held their biggest lead of the game with 8:15 remaining in the first half, 17-12. However, the Eagles (6-16, 3-8 LC) used a 14-3 run to take a 26-20 advantage with 2:00 left.

After trailing by just two at the half, Catholic scored the first six points of the second, including four from Hayes, to go back in front, 30-26 with 15:49 to play.

Two free throws by junior Justin Pryor pulled the Cardinals within three, 52-49, with 5:02 remaining, but Juniata finished the game by scoring 15 of the final 17 points as Catholic went 0-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-6 from the free throw line.

The Cardinals finished 20-of-28 from the free throw line, including 14-for-20 in the second half, while the Eagles were 24-of-28 and 20-of-24 in the second half. Juniata also tied a season high with nine three-pointers.

Senior Arvelle Jones made his first career start for the Cardinals, totaling six points and three rebounds in a career-high 24 minutes.

Catholic hosts Susquehanna on Saturday for senior day. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its five seniors: Hayes, Hartmann, Jones, Ben Reese and Thomas Huerter.
