Late Rally Falls Short, Cardinals Edged by Moravian, 59-56

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After rallying from a 10-point deficit, the Catholic University men's basketball team missed an attempt to tie the game at the end of regulation before dropping a Landmark Conference contest to Moravian Saturday at Franny Murray Court, 59-56.

The Cardinals (7-12, 3-5 LC) were looking for their first three-game win streak since a 90-88 win over Moravian at home on Feb. 17, 2018. Four of the team's losses have come by just three points or less.

Senior Riley Hayes totaled his second-straight double double and seventh of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. He has 22 career double doubles and is now just 62 points shy of becoming the 45th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

Senior Collin Hartmann finished with 10 points and five rebounds while sophomores David Angelo and Will Mulquin each finished with nine points.

The Greyhounds (10-9, 5-3 LC) led 54-44 with 7:48 remaining in the second half before Catholic scored the next eight points, including six from Hayes, to pull within two with 3:49 to play.

A three-pointer by C.J. Barnes put Moravian back in front by five before a jumper by senior Thomas Huerter and two free throws from freshman Jack Kouba cut the Cards' deficit to 57-56 with seven seconds remaining.

Forced to foul, Catholic put the Greyhounds on the free throw line where Barnes hit both attempts to put the visitors in front by three. Moravian finished 8-of-9 from the line, including 4-of-5 in the second half.

Just like the first meeting back on January 11, the Cardinals had to go the lenghth of the court and while they managed to get a shot off this time, it was blocked and the Greyhounds escaped with another one-possession victory.

Four of the last six meetings between these two teams have been decided by three points or less with Moravian winning three.

Kouba finished with five points and five rebounds as he and Mulquin combined for 14 of Catholic's 20 points off the bench.

The Cardinals conclude their three-game homestand on Wednesday when they host Elizabethtown at 7 p.m. Trailing by three, Catholic had two chances to tie the game in the final eight seconds, but both attempts were off the mark as the Blue Jays escaped with a 53-50 home win on January 22.
