Starters Carry Cardinals to 67-59 Victory Over Goucher

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by 12 points and 18 rebounds from senior Riley Hayes, the Catholic University men's basketball team posted a 67-59 Landmark Conference victory over Goucher Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court.

The Cardinals (7-11, 3-4 LC) posted their sixth-straight home win against the Gophers and their 22nd win the last 25 meetings since the inaugural season of the Landmark Conference in 2007-08.

Hayes totaled his sixth double double of the season and the 21st of his career. He had six points and 12 rebounds in the first half as Catholic led 35-28 at halftime.

Hayes was one of three Cardinals starters to score in double figures as he and junior Justin Pryor both had a game-high 12 points. Pryor finished three points shy of his season high set at Moravian on January 11.

Catholic's five starters combined for 42 of the team's 67 points with senior Collin Hartmann adding 11 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. After scoring a career and team-high 13 points in Saturday's road win over first-place Susquehanna, sophomore David Angelo finished with five points.

Goucher (4-14, 1-6 LC) jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the game's first 3:25 and maintained its six-point advantage with 14:36 remaining in the first half, 14-8.

The Cardinals used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 16-16 before a 12-5 spurt gave the home team a 34-27 lead with 40 seconds to play. Pryor scored six points during the run while Hayes added four, all at the free throw line.

Catholic never trailed the rest of the way and led by as many as 12 with 17:47 left in the second half following a jumper by senior Thomas Huerter.

The Gophers cut their deficit to three with 6:59 remaining and four with 1:31 to play, but Hartmann answered with a three-pointer on both occassions to keep the visitors at bay.

Sophomore Will Mulquin added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Cards.

Catholic continues its three-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts Moravian at 2 p.m. The Greyhounds hold a one-game lead over the Cardinals for the fourth and final spot in the 2020 Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship with seven remaining.
