Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball sophomore David Angelo scored a career-high 13 points while the Cardinals held Susquehanna to a season-low 59 points en route to a 64-59 victory Saturday at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.
Catholic (6-11, 2-4 LC), who snapped a three-game road skid, defeated the River Hawks for the third time in the last five meetings, including the second time in the last three at Houts Gymnasium.
Susquehanna (12-5, 5-1 LC) entered the day undefeated atop the Landmark Conference standings while having won 14 of its last 19 conference contests and 15 of its last 20 at home following a 75-73 win over Scranton on Wednesday.
"I am really proud of the way our guys competed today," said first-year head coach Aaron Kelly '06. "This is has been a tough and resilient group all year, and we have remained focused despite some tough losses so I was happy to see them rewarded today with a great team win."
The Cardinals limited the River Hawks to 21-of-69 shooting from the floor for a season-low 30.4 percent. Susquehanna was also just 8-of-13 from the free throw line while Catholic was 14-of-27, including 13-of-26 in the second half. The Cards were 8-of-18 in the final 1:26 to seal the victory.
Catholic led for all but 4:29. Susquehanna held a 15-12 advantage before a three-point play by sophomore Zach Spooner tied the game and a three-pointer by Angelo gave the Cardinals the lead for good, 18-15 with 9:55 remaining in the first half.
Spooner, Angelo and sophomore Frank Lumaj each had six first-half points as Catholic led 32-27 at halftime. Senior Thomas Huerter had four points, three rebounds and three assists.
A 7-1 run midway through the second half gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 13 points, 44-31 with 13:14 left.
Angelo totaled 12 of his 13 points from three-point range where he was 4-of-7. Huerter finished with seven points, four rebounds and five assists while Spooner, Lumaj and senior Collin Hartmann each totaled eight points.
Catholic begins a three-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Goucher at Franny Murray Court beginning at 7 p.m.
