Second Half Run Carries Scranton Past Cardinals, 74-64

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Collin Hartmann led the team in scoring for the second-straight game, but Scranton outscored the Cardinals by 15 in the second half en route to a 74-64 victory Saturday at Franny Murray Court.

Catholic (5-10, 1-3 LC), who has won three of the last five at home against the Royals, led for all but 10 minutes.

A layup by sophomore Will Mulquin gave the Cards a 51-47 lead with 11:14 remaining in the second half before the Royals used a 6-1 run to take a 53-52 advantage with 9:12 to play. Matthew Mancuso scored five of the six points for Scranton who took its first lead since the 13:46 mark of the first half.

Catholic regained the lead on free throws by Hartmann and senior Riley Hayes, but a jumper by Mancuso with 7:12 left put the Royals in front for good.

First-place Scranton (12-3, 4-0 LC) outscored the Cardinals 21-10 over the final seven minutes and 43-28 in the second half as Catholic was 9-of-28 from the floor and 9-of-18 from the free throw line.

The Cards led by as many as seven in the first half, leading for all but 2:06. The team scored 22 points in the paint and 17 off 12 Royal turnovers.

Hartmann totaled 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half where he was 4-for-4 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. Hayes had six points and four rebounds in the first 20 minutes while freshman Jack Kouba added eight points.

Hayes finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds while Mulquin had 10 points and six rebounds.

Catholic was just 11-of-21 from the free throw line while Scranton was 18-of-24. Mancuso was 13-of-15 from the line while totaling 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and six blocks.

The Cardinals begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Elizabethtown who is currently in a three-way tie with Catholic and Juniata for fifth in the conference standings. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
