WASHINGTON, D.C. - In its first dual match of the season, the Catholic University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The Cardinals (1-0) began the day with two doubles wins as sophomore Brooke Simonson and senior Lauren Edwards took an 8-1 win from the Seahawks. Freshmen Abby Cassidy and Hanna Scali picked up the second win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
Five-straight singles victories sealed the match for Catholic. Simonson posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles and was followed by a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 by junior Colleen McLaughlin to put the Cardinals up 4-1.
Senior Lauren Edwards earned the clinching point for the Cards with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
Cassidy added a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles while freshman Bridget Burrus finished the day with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles.
Catholic travels to Stevenson for a nonconference contest tomorrow.
