Scott Totals Four Hits, Catholic Sweeps Hood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University softball team swept Hood College in a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday. Junior Sabrina Scott had a day, throwing a complete game for the win in game one while going 4-8 on the day with a walk-off single.

Game 1: Catholic 2, Hood 1

The Cardinals recorded 12 hits from seven different players in their 2-1 win over the Blazers. Catholic was led by junior Sabrina Scott going 3-4 and sophomore Allie Lajeunesse who went 2-3 at the plate.

The Blazers scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Hood College then held on to that lead through the next three innings as the Cards could not convert their four hits into runs.

In the top of the seventh Catholic broke it open. Freshman Bella Ronca led off the inning with a single to left field. In her first game back since spring break, freshman Marissa Bruder then advanced Ronca to second on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Taylor Forgen followed with a single to second base, putting runners on first and third. Sophomore Makayla Czan took advantage of the situation with a deep fly ball to left field, but then reached on an error, scoring Ronca to tie the ball game. With runners on first and second, Scott came up big with another walk off to win the game for the Cards.

Game 2: Catholic 10, Hood 5

Catholic continued its success offensively in the game two with 15 hits and 10 RBI's. Four Cardinals posted a multi-hit game, including sophomore Taylor Forgen and sophomore Giselle Diaz who both went an impressive 3-4. In the circle, it was a team effort as the Cards relied on their whole staff to secure the win. Junior Claire Sturek got the start and earned the win, throwing 3.1 innings. She was then relieved by junior Sabrina Scott for two-thirds innings before sophomore Allie Lajeunesse closed the game, only allowing two hits.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start, forcing a three up, three down inning in the top of the first before scoring in the bottom of the frame to go up 1-0. Freshman Marissa Bruder drew a walk and Forgen put down a base hit bunt and advanced Bruder to third. Sophomore Makayla Czan then hit a fly ball to right field, but Bruder was thrown out at home. With Forgen now on third, junior Sabrina Scott hit a single to left field, to score Forgen.

The Blazers then scored in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1.

Catholic respond with a blowout inning, scoring six runs on six hits. Diaz hit a leadoff triple to right center before junior Kacie Badolato followed with a double to right field to score Diaz. After drawing a walk, freshman Bella Ronca, advanced to second on a single from Bruder. With bases loaded, Czan hit a single to center field, scoring Ronca and Bruder to put the Cards up three. Sophomore Juliet Lodes kept things going with a single to right center, scoring Czan and Forgen who reached on a fielder's choice. The Cardinals took a 7-1 lead after batting through their entire lineup. Diaz singled to left field to score Lodes and Scott, who reached on a hit by pitch.

After a quiet third inning, both teams scored three runs in the fourth.

Hood tacked on one more run in the fifth inning, but Catholic held on for its eleventh win of the season.

The Cardinals will return to action at home on Saturday, April 6 as they host Landmark Conference opponent Juniata College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
