WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic University softball team swept Drew in their final Landmark Conference doubleheader of the season. The Cardinals went 9-3 in conference play this season, their best record since joining the Landmark Conference.

Game 1: Catholic 8, Drew 0

Catholic's offense put together a strong performance in game one. Seven Cardinals recorded at least one hit. Sophomore Giselle Diaz and junior Kacie Badolato went an impressive 2 for 3 at the plate.

The Cardinals jumped on the Rangers scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Taylor Forgen got things started with a single up the middle. Junior Sabrina Scott then drew a walk before both runners scored on a double from sophomore Makayla Czan.

After a quiet second inning, Catholic's offense went back to work. Junior Kacie Badolato hit a double to deep center to score Scott, who reached on a single, giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Juliet Lodes then reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Makayla Czan scored on the play. With runners on first and third, the Cardinals scored one more run on a double steal.

In the fourth inning, the Cards took advantage of two Ranger errors to go up 6-0.

Following a strong defensive inning, sophomore Giselle Diaz led off with a single down the right-field line. With runners on first and second, sophomore Sophie Maccarone hit a two-run double to right center to give Catholic an 8-0 lead and end the game in five innings.

Junior Sabrina Scott earned her eleventh win of the season, recording three strikeouts and only allowing five hits.

Game 2: Catholic 11, Drew 5

Game two proved to be another team effort as the Cards recorded twelve hits from nine different players. Junior Claire Sturek got the start in the circle, throwing five and one-third innings. The Springfield, Va. native did not allow a hit through four and two-thirds innings. Junior Sabrina Scott then entered to close the game for the Cards

The Cardinals scored first to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Marissa Bruder was hit by a pitch before she advanced to second on a groundout. Junior Sabrina Scott then reached on an error before Bruder scored on a wild pitch. With Scott now on second, sophomore Makayla Czan hit a single up the middle to score Scott. She then advanced to third on an error. Junior Kacie Badolato then hit a double to left field to score Czan and give Catholic a quick lead.

The Cards tacked on one more in the third. Czan led off with a double to right center before sophomore Giselle Diaz scored Czan on a single to the right side.

Sturek and the Catholic defense forced a three up three down inning for the Rangers in the top of the fourth. The Cards then took the momentum into the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on five hits to go up 8-0.

However, Drew did not back down. In the top of the fifth, with two outs the Rangers scored four runs on four hits to avoid a run rule.

But the Rangers could not close the gap, Catholic would score three more runs to earn their third conference sweep of the season.

Catholic will return to action at the Landmark Conference Tournament on Friday, May 3. The Cardinals are the two seed in the tournament and are set to play Susquehanna University at 1 p.m.
