Scott Leads Cardinals to Sweep at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Catholic University softball team got the sweep in a nonconference doubleheader against Frostburg State on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals (18-18) were led by junior standout Sabrina Scott.

In game one, Scott went an impressive 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run. The junior also threw her 12th complete game of the season.

Game 1: Catholic 7, Frostburg State 5

The Cardinals got off to a quick start in game one, scoring in the top of the first. Freshman Marissa Bruder led off with a single up the middle before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior Sabrina Scott then hit a double to left center, scoring Bruder to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run to tie the game.

In the top of the third, the Bruder and Scott duo went to work. The freshman hit another leadoff single before the Medford, N.J. native hit a two-run home run to right center to regain the lead for the Cards.

Frostburg then scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 advantage.

Scott and the Cardinal defense went on the shutdown the Bobcats in the remaining four innings, not allowing another run.

Catholic's offense then propelled the Cards to a 7-5 victory. Sophomore Sophie Maccarone got things started with a base hit up the middle. Freshman Bella Ronca then singled to put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Maccarone scored on a Bruder groundout. With two outs in the fourth, sophomore Taylor Forgen singled to left center, scoring Ronca.

The Cards took the lead on two Bobcat errors. Bruder singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher. Maccarone, who reached on an error scored on the play. Bruder then scored an insurance run on a single from Scott.

Game 2: Catholic 10, Frostburg State 1

Catholic kept the momentum going into game two, scoring 10 runs on seven hits to end the game in five innings. Freshman Marissa Bruder went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. In the circle, junior Claire Sturek only allowed three hits to earn her sixth win of the season.

The Cardinals jumped on the Bobcats, taking a 5-0 lead through two innings. Bruder drew the walk before scoring the first run of the game on a groundout from sophomore Taylor Forgen.

Sophomore Sophie Maccarone singled up the middle to score junior Kacie Badolato and sophomore Giselle Diaz. Maccarone then stole second before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Bruder scored the last run of the second inning on two more Bobcat errors.

Frostburg scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the frame.

After a quiet third inning, the Cards tacked on one more run. Maccarone drew a walk before stealing her second base of the day. The sophomore then scored on a throwing error by the first baseman.

Catholic closed the door in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits. Freshman Elizabeth Dew scored as a pinch runner on an error. Badolato, who reached on an error, and sophomore Giselle Diaz both scored on the Bobcats sixth error of the game to take a nine run advantage.

Sturek and the Catholic defense held Frostburg in the bottom of the fifth to improve the Cards to .500 on the season.

Catholic returns to action at home on Saturday, April 27 against Drew for its final regular season doubleheader of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
