BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Catholic University softball team defeated No. 10 Moravian, 3-2, in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.

Game 1: Catholic 2, Moravian 1

Game one proved to be a pitcher's duel as both teams recorded only two hits through the first five innings. Junior Sabrina Scott had a big day, leading the Cards both in the circle and at the plate. The Medford, N.J. native went 4-2 at the plate with one RBI and one run. In the circle, she threw another complete game, fanning two and only allowing one Greyhound run.

In the top of the sixth, the Cards tallied three hits. Freshman Marissa Bruder got things started with a double to right center. Sophomore Taylor Forgen then singled to left, but Bruder was thrown out at third for the second out of the inning. Junior Sabrina Scott singled through the left side to advance Forgen, but both runners were left stranded to keep the game scoreless.

The seventh inning was evenly played by both teams, each pitcher faced four batters and allowed one hit.

With a tied ball game at the end of seven, the game went into extra innings. The Cardinals jumped on the Greyhounds in the top of the inning, scoring two runs to take the lead. Freshman Bella Ronca drew a walk, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bruder. Scott then hit a single up the middle to score Ronca, the junior then advanced to second on the throw. Sophomore Makayla Czan reached on a throwing error by the second baseman, and Scott scored on the play.

In the bottom of the frame, Moravian scored one run on three hits but fell short for their first Landmark Conference loss of the season, and only their fourth loss overall.

Game 2: Moravian 12, Catholic 4

Game two was a different story, as No. 10 Moravian recorded an impressive 12 runs on 15 hits. The Cardinals battled through six innings but were ultimately triumphed by the Greyhounds. Sophomore Giselle Diaz went 2-2 at the plate with one walk, one RBI and a run scored. Junior Claire Sturek got the start of the Cards, before being relieved by sophomore Allie Lajeunesse.

Moravian jumped on the Cardinals with a quick 8-0 lead through three innings.

However, Catholic responded in the top of the fourth scoring two runs. Sophomore Makayla Czan led off with a walk before Diaz singled to center field. Junior Kacie Badolato hit a single down the right field line to score Czan and advance Diaz to third. Sophomore Juliet Lodes then reached on a fielder's choice to score Diaz.

After a big defensive inning, Catholic tacked on two more runs to bring the Cardinals within four. Czan hit a base hit to center field to score sophomore Taylor Forgen, who reached on dropped fly ball by the catcher. Scott, who reached on a fielder's choice then scored on a sacrifice fly from Diaz.

But the Greyhounds went to work in the next two innings, scoring four runs on seven hits to go up 12-4 and end the game in six innings.

Catholic returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 17 at Rutgers-Camden. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
