Cardinals Fall to First-Place Goucher at Home, 9-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's tennis team was swept in a Landmark Conference contest at home on Wednesday, falling to first-place Goucher at The Dowd Family Tennis Courts, 9-0.

The Cardinals (3-9, 1-4 LC) fell to 0-5 at home this season.

Winners of 11 consecutive matches, the Gophers (13-3, 5-0 LC) won all nine matches in straight sets. The senior tandem of Frankie Fortunati and Ted Tiu lost for the first time in their last three matches at No. 2 doubles, dropping a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) decision.

At No. 3 doubles, the duo of junior Kyle Weber and freshman Paul Smith also lost for the first time in their last three matches together, falling to Omosesan Adebamgbe and Josiah Meekins.

In singles, Fortunati, the reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, had his three-match winning streak stopped following a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Tetsuya Ota at No. 1.

Catholic hosts Juniata on Saturday in its final home match of the season beginning at 1 p.m. It will also be the final home match in the careers of Tiu and senior Matt Pham.
