SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic University softball team split with Landmark Conference opponent Susquehanna on Sunday.

Game 1: Catholic 4, Susquehanna 1

The Cardinals were led by sophomore Allie Lajeunesse, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Junior Sabrina Scott threw her sixth complete game of the season, only allowing one run on four hits and recorded three strikeouts.

The game was scoreless through the third inning before the River Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.

The Cards answered back in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Taylor Forgen got things started with a leadoff double to right center. Scott then traded places with Forgen, hitting a double down the left field line to tie the game.

After a pitching change for Susquehanna, sophomore Juliet Lodes put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Scott to second. Junior Shannon Harrington then singled to third base to score Scott and give the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage.

Scott and her defense stepped up big in the bottom of the frame with a three up, three down inning.

Catholic tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Scott reached on an error by the right fielder before Lodes hit into a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Harrington then recorded her second hit of the day, scoring Lodes. Sophomore Giselle Diaz singled to the pitcher, advancing Harrington to third before junior Kacie Badolato reached on an error, scoring Harrington to take a 4-1 lead.

The Cards would hold on for their third Landmark Conference win of the season.

Game 2: Susquehanna 6, Catholic 4

The Cards recorded seven hits from seven different players in their 6-4 loss to Susquehanna. Junior Claire Sturek got the start in the circle for Catholic, recording five strikeouts, five walks and allowing four hits. Junior Sabrina Scott then entered the game in relief, throwing two innings.

Catholic got out to a quick start scoring three runs in the top of the first. Freshman Bella Ronca led off with a walk. Sophomore Taylor Forgen then singled to center field, before sophomore Makayla Czan put down a base hit bunt to load the bases. Scott then grounded out to the shortstop but scored Ronca on the play. Forgen scored the second run for the Cards off of a wild pitch, and Czan advanced. Sophomore Juliet Lodes recorded the final RBI of the inning, scoring Czan.

The River Hawks (6-7, 1-1) responded scoring two runs off of two hits in the bottom of the frame, making it a 3-2 ballgame.

The Cardinals tacked on one more run in the third when Scott hit a solo home run over the left field fence, which marks her first home run of the season, and third in her career.

Catholic had another great opportunity to build their lead in the top of the fourth when sophomore Allie Lajeunesse got things started with a single through the left side. Junior Kacie Badolato then grounded out, moving Lajeunesse into scoring position. Ronca singled to the left side, but Lajeunesse was thrown out at home.

Susquehanna then scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to bring the River Hawks within one.

After a quiet fifth inning for both teams, Catholic had another opportunity to put runs on the board in the top of the sixth. Badolato singled to left field, followed by a single from junior Shannon Harrington. Both runners then advanced on the play into scoring position, but with two outs were left stranded.

The River Hawks scored three unearned runs off of two hits and two errors in the bottom of the frame to take the 6-4 lead. Susquehanna secured their first Landmark Conference win of the season in the top of the seventh.

Catholic returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 27 at home against Washington College.
