Cardinals Drop Non-Conference Contest at Marymount (VA)

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - Catholic University men's basketball sophomore Will Mulquin scored a team-high 11 points, but Marymount (VA) scored 29 points off turnovers and another 17 from the free throw line in a 67-44 victory Monday at Converse Family Fieldhouse.

The Cardinals (1-5) fell for just the sixth time in the last 21 games in the series dating back to 2000.

Two free throws by sophomore Zach Spooner cut Catholic's deficit to three, 35-32 with 15:34 remaining in the second half. However, a 9-0 run gave the Saints their largest lead of the game to that point, 44-32 with 13:09 left.

Following a jumper by Mulquin, the Cards trailed by nine, 50-41, before Marymount outscored them 12-1 over the next 6:12 to extend the margin to 20 with just 2:14 to play.

The Saints (5-2) were 15-of-27 from the floor in the second half compared to 8-of-22 for the Cardinals. Marymount outscored the Cards, 39-22, getting 29 points from its starting five.

With senior Riley Hayes not playing due to injury, Catholic was outscored 40-26 in points in the paint, including 26-12 in the decisive second half.

The Saints were also 17-of-24 from the free throw line while the Cardinals were just 7-of-9.

Senior Thomas Huerter posted his third, double digit scoring performance in six games as a Cardinal as he finished with 10 points. Senior Collin Hartmann totaled eight points and a team-high five rebounds while sophomore David Angelo made his first career start.

Freshman Titus Lawrence added six points, the first points of his career.

Catholic opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday against Drew. Tipoff is at 2 p.m., inside the DuFour Center.
