WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's swimming & diving team handled Landmark Conference foe Elizabethtown in a 199-63 dual meet victory on Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center Pool.
The Cardinals swept the top three spots in nine events in the team's second meet victory of the season. The Cards got things started right away in the 200-medley relay to pick up 15 points in the meet's first event.
Caroline Beal (29.12), Madeline Doucette (31.99), Grace Smith (28.31), and Alexa Hipp (25.98) took first place with a final time of 1:55.40. Two Cardinals foursomes consisting of Bridget Roach, Cagney Boyle, Emily Tighe and Claire Laux (2:01.92), and Jacquelyn Kilcommons, Madeline Seeley-Hacker, Katie Van Lew, and Marie Redoutey (2:06.92) followed for second and third.
Freshman Mary Pilkington touched first in the 1000-freestyle event with a winning time of 11:37.08.
Catholic swept first, second, and third in two straight events starting with the 100-backstroke. Emily Earley (1:05.57), Kilcommons (1:05.91), and Katie Paiva (1:07.77) went one-two-three in the backstroke, and then Doucette (1:11.93), Aubrey McDonough (1:16.37), and Ally Noccioli (1:18.45) swept in the 100-breaststroke.
The Cards dominated the 50-freestyle sprint with the top three finishers as Hipp touched first at 25.81, followed by Emma Gould (26.23) and Beal (26.29). An extra couple lengths did not change the result in the 100-freestyle as Beal finished first with a time of 57.93, while Megan Lowell (58.20) and Kelly Smith (59.08) took second and third.
Roach got the top spot in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:18.73, and then Noccioli, McDonough, and Hannah Corcoran took first, second, and third in the 200-breaststroke.
Kate Von Heeringen won the 500-freestyle at 5:42.40, followed by her teammates Colleen McDonald (5:43.52) and Pilkington (5:45.56). Gould then touched first in the 100-butterfly with a time of 1:03.61.
The sweeps continued in the last two events of the meet, as Boyle, Tighe, and Laux went one-two-three in the 400-individual medley. Gould (26.82), Hipp (25.91), Doucette (26.63), and Lowell (26.96) combined for a 1:46.32 winning time in the 200-freestyle relay to close the meet and finish with a 199-63 meet victory.
Nellie Adams and Sophia Washington scored on the boards as exhibition competitors, as Adams earned a 103.15 score and Washington scored 93.70 in the 1-meter diving event. Adams qualified to compete at the 3-meter level, scoring 99.50.
Catholic travels to take on another Landmark opponent in Goucher next Saturday, November 16. Meet time in Baltimore, Md. is set for 1 p.m.
