Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University volleyball senior Isabelle Cooper had six kills, five digs and three blocks while senior Nina Kasputis had seven digs as the Cardinals swept a Landmark Conference match with Goucher Wednesday on Senior Night, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23.
Catholic (15-15, 1-3 LC) wraps up the home portion of its 2019 schedule with wins in six of seven matches, losing only to Stevenson who was receiving votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll and one of three remaining undefeated teams in Division III.
Junior Patricia Martinez led the Cardinals with 16 kills, a .385 hitting percentage and nine digs. Junior Joya Libbus added six kills and .500 hitting percentage while sophomore Caroline Kelly totaled 12 digs.
Catholic scored the first three points of the first set and never trailed, leading by as many as six, 9-3. The Gophers tied the set at 19-19 before the Cards scored six of the final seven points, including two on kills fom Libbus and three on Goucher attack errors to take the five-point victory. Libbus and Martinez combined for eight of the Catholic's 10 kills.
The Cardinals took another 3-0 lead to start the second set before the Gophers (11-10, 0-4 LC) rallied to tie the set at 4-4. The visitors then used a 9-4 run to take their largest lead at 17-12. Following a timeout, Catholic would scored seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 19-19 before closing the set by scoring the final four points after Goucher held set points at 24-22. The Cards totaled 12 kills and just two attack errors on 41 attempts in the second set with Martinez adding five kills. Kasputis led all players with six digs.
The third set featured 15 ties and six lead changes. The Gophers led by two on three separate occasions at 18-16, 20-18 and 21-19, but Catholic rallied to tie the set at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before scoring the final two points on a kill by Libbus and a Goucher attack error. Martinez totaled six of the Cards' 13 kills in the set while adding four digs.
Sophomore Kaitlyn McDonough finished with five kills while junior Maria Gonzalez totaled 31 assists, eight digs and three block assists. Junior Kate Murphy added six digs.
Catholic concludes the regular season on Saturday with a Landmark Conference tri-match at Juniata. The Cardinals will face Susquehanna at 1:30 p.m., before taking on Moravian at 4 p.m.
