Cards Beat Juniata, All Five Starters Score in Double Figures

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball junior Riley Hayes scored a team-high 18 points to lead all five starters who scored in double figures while the Cardinals went 24-of-27 from the free throw line en route to a Landmark Conference road win at Juniata Wednesday, 88-79.

Catholic (6-8, 2-1 Landmark) was 20-of-23 from the free throw line in the second half, including 7-of-8 in the final 37 seconds to preserve a four-point lead and extend it into a nine-point victory. The Cards' five starters, who combined to score 69 points, were 21-of-24 from the line and 17-of-20 in the second half.

Senior Andre Mitchell and junior Collin Hartmann each totaled 14 points while junior Brandon Easton added 12 points and senior Jimmy Golaszewski had 11. The last time Catholic had five players score in double figures was when Golaszewski (19), Hayes (19), Mitchell (16) and Easton (11) joined Jay Howard (19) in totaling 84 points in a 90-84 win over Moravian at home on Feb. 17, 2018.

The Eagles (6-8, 0-3 Landmark) led 17-12 with 13:10 left in the first half before an 8-1 run by the Cardinals, capped by a three-point play from Hayes, gave them their first lead, 20-18 with 10:32 remaining in the first half.

Catholic stretched that lead to as many as six, 31-25 with 6:48 left, before taking a 42-40 advantage at halftime. Hayes had 11 of his 18 points in the first half.

A three-pointer by Nathan Markey to start the second half gave the Eagles a brief lead before the Cards answered with a three-pointer from Hartmann to retake the lead 22 seconds later. Catholic would never trail again while stretching its lead to as many as nine, 66-57 with 8:30 to play, following two free throws from Golaszewski.

In addition to their clutch performance at the free throw line, the Cardinals shot 55.3 percent from the floor. They were 12-of-19 from three-point range, the second-most the team has made this season. The Cards made 14 in a 96-69 win at Gallaudet on November 18.

Mitchell added a game-high eight rebounds while Easton had six assists. Hartmann scored 12 of his 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc while Mitchell was 3-for-4. Freshman Will Mulquin, who just missed double digits with nine points, was 3-for-3 from three-point range.

Catholic travels to rival Scranton on Saturday for a 4 p.m., tip-off against the Royals.
