Cardinals Move Into Second Place With Sweep at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - Led by 14 kills and 11 digs by sophomore Patricia Martinez, the Catholic University women's volleyball team moved into a three-way tie for second place in the Landmark Conference standings with a sweep over Goucher Wednesday night at Decker Sports and Recreation Center.

The Cardinals (18-11, 3-1 LC) have now won five of their last seven and have secured a spot in the Landmark Conference Volleyball Championship for the first time since 2016.

Martinez totaled her fifth consecutive double double and her 16th of the season. She also posted a season-high .438 hitting percentage with 14 kills and zero errors in 32 attempts.

Junior Isabelle Cooper added 11 kills, her ninth match with at least 10 kills this season, while freshman Mackenzie Collier notched her 11th double double with 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs.

The first set featured 10 ties, the last coming at 21-21 before Catholic scored four of the final five points, including two on kills by Cooper and one from Martinez.

The Cardinals trailed by as many as four in the second set, 15-11, but closed with a 14-3 run to rally for the seven-point victory. Collier totaled seven of her 10 kills in the second set while Cooper added three as the duo account for 10 of the team's 14 kills.

Catholic took a 14-9 lead in the third set before the Gophers (10-14, 0-4 LC) rallied to tie it at 18-18. The Cardinals took a 23-20 advantged behind a kill from sophomore Joya Libbus, service ace from Collier and a Kill by martinez, but Goucher rallied within one at 23-22 before a service error and kill by Cooper sealed the match for Catholic.

Freshman Juliana Michniak had five kills while had three and three total blocks. Sophomore Maria Gonzalez totaled three kills, 33 assists and five digs with freshman Caroline Kelly adding 16 digs.

The Cardinals have six days before returning to action next Wednesday, October 24 against Gallaudet on Senior Day. Prior to the match at 7 p.m., the team will honor senior Lauren Unsworth with a special pregame ceremony.
