Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team moved into second-place in the Landmark Conference standings on Saturday afternoon inside the DuFour Center as the Cardinals routed Scranton, 76-52.
The Cardinal defense held Scranton to just five made field goals in the first half and held the Royals to under 32-percent shooting from the field and 28-percent from beyond the arc.
Senior Jay Howard had a game-high 26 points and added eight rebounds as he was one of three Cardinals with double-digit points and four with seven-or-more rebounds.
Scranton scored the first basket of the game but Catholic answered with a 3-pointer from junior Andre Mitchell and never looked back.
The Cardinals opened the game with a 14-5 lead and held a 20-point advantage at the break, 37-17.
Catholic made seven more field goals and 13 more free throws than Scranton in the contest and built its lead up to 27 with just over a minute left in the game.
The Cards also owned the rebounding advantage, 46-32, and shot 79-percent from the free throw line while Scranton hit just 6-of-11 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Riley Hayes was second on the team with 15 points and matched Howard with a team-high eight rebounds. He also added three blocks and two steals. Junior Jimmy Golaszewski was the third Cardinal in double-digit scoring with 12 points and pulled down seven boards.
Winners of four of their last five games, Catholic now begins a three-game road trip to close out January on Wednesday the 24th at Susquehanna. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
