Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America men's basketball team rolled to a 90-64 Landmark Conference victory over Goucher on Wednesday night inside the DuFour Center. The Cardinals got a well-rounded team effort as 10 different players appeared on the scoresheet.

Catholic improves to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play behind a team-high 22 points from senior Jay Howard. It was his sixth-straight game with 20-plus points as he shot 10-of-15 from the field and added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Cardinals took care of the basketball and battled on the boards to win the rebounding advantage, 49-36. The strong play of sophomore Riley Hayes helped the Cards to the edge as he set a career high in rebounds for the second-straight game with 15 boards. He also scored 12 points for his third double-double of the season.

Catholic shot 47.8-percent from the field and held Goucher to just a 33.8-percent clip from the field. The Cardinals also scored 20 of their points off 13 Gopher turnovers while only committing eight themselves.

Thanks, large-in-part to work done by Howard and Hayes down low, the Cards held a 38-10 advantage in points in the paint.

Goucher scored the first basket of the game on a 3-pointer but Catholic answered with a 14-2 run to take control.

Catholic went into the break up 43-29 and though Goucher was able to cut the lead to single digits at the start of the second, the Cardinals exploded to move its lead to 31 with just under six minutes to play in the game.

Junior Jimmy Golaszewski (14 points) and sophomore Ross Gerber (12 points) rounded out four double-digit scorers for head coach Steve Howes. Junior guard Andre Mitchell just missed tying his career high with eight assists. He also did not commit a turnover with eight points in 29 minutes.

Catholic now has some momentum heading into a pivotal home, Landmark matchup against Scranton this Saturday at 2 p.m.
