Catholic Wins Home Opener Against Franciscan, 7-2

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's tennis team played its first home match on the Dowd Family Courts on Friday afternoon and were victorious over Franciscan, 7-2.

Catholic started the day down in nearly all its matches but fought back to take all doubles matches as well as the top four singles bouts.

Senior No. 1 Jenna Gietl went over in singles, 7-5, 6-2. She also teamed with junior Erin Cole for an 8-6 victory in the top doubles match.

Cole was also impressive at No. 3 singles, dropping just two points in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Senior Sarah MacLean fought back from a 0-6 loss in the first set as she won the second, 6-2, before a tie-breaking win in the deciding set with a 7-4 bout-decider to win, 7-6.

MacLean also teamed with freshman Caroline Ciocco for a No. 2 doubles win, 8-5.

Catholic continues a busy weekend with a match at McDaniel on Saturday, September 16th, before returning home on Sunday against St. Mary's (Md.).
